BREMERTON, WA – Kevin Flavin scored twice and Chris Pugh added a goal in the Tumwater Pioneers’ franchise debut in the Premier Arena Soccer League on Saturday night, an 11-3 loss to the Kitsap Pumas at the Olympic Soccer and Sports Center in Bremerton. Matt Friesen and Scott Ford each scored two goals for the Pumas.
The Pumas opened up a 2-0 lead in a physical first quarter and extended their lead to 4-0 in the second quarter before Flavin scored the first goal in Pioneers franchise history a minute before the first half came to a close. The Pios, despite struggling in their first league half, went to the locker room down by just three goals, 4-1.
The Pumas struck first in the second half, notching a power play goal to make the score 5-1 and added two more in the third quarter. But the Pios also added a pair of goals of their own, Pugh’s first and Flavin’s second and went into the final quarter down by four goals, 7-3.
But the Pumas’ experience took over in the fourth quarter putting the game out of reach with four goals while holding the Pioneers scoreless over the final 15 minutes to take home the 11-3 opening night victory. The Pumas move to 1-0 on the young season while the Pioneers fall to 0-1 in the PASL Northwest Division.
The Pioneers have a bye in week two and will travel to Salem, Oregon on Saturday, December 15th to take on the Oregon Blacktails at the Salem Soccer Center. First kick is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
