Blacktails jump out to big lead, hold off Pioneers 14-5
SALEM, OR – Chris Pugh scored two goals in the first half for the Tumwater Pioneers but the Oregon Blacktails opened up a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and took home a 14-5 victory at the Salem Soccer Center on Saturday night. Matt Herrera, Corey Johnson and Tom Arndt added goals for the Pioneers in the loss while Tyler Hagen led the Blacktails with four goals, all in the second half.
The Pioneers quickly fell behind allowing five goals in the first quarter but held the Blacktails to one goal in the second and behind goals from Pugh and Herrera, cut the Oregon lead to 6-3 at the half. Oregon’s Eric Branch scored both of his goals in the first 30 minutes.
But the Blacktails poured it on in the third period scoring five times to open up a commanding 11-3 lead. Arndt and Johnson each added goals for the Pios in the fourth once the game was out of reach.
Oregon outshot the Pioneers 36-19. Mike Sharpe got the start in goal for the Pioneers and made 15 saves. Mauricio Sanchez relieved him late and made five saves.
Tumwater falls to 0-2 in the Premier Arena Soccer League’s Northwest Division while Oregon moves to 2-1.
The PASL takes a break for the holidays and will return on January 5th when the Pioneers host their first home game in franchise history when they take on the Marysville Ruckus. First kick at Tumwater Indoor Sports is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Tickets are just $5 for adults, $3 for children and can be purchased during business hours at Tumwater Indoor Sports.
